LUFA Negotiations Update

To the General Membership of the Laurentian Students’ Union (all LU Barrie students):

This message is to update students with regard to the Laurentian University Faculty Association (LUFA) negotiations.

For those who are unaware, LUFA has been negotiating their contract renewals with the University administration since May of this year. Having met over thirty times since, as rumors may have suggested, the Faculty Association and the University have been unable to reach an agreement up until this point.

Last Friday, September 19th 2014, LUFA released an official statement that read as follows;

(Sudbury, ON-September 19, 2014) The Laurentian University Faculty Association (LUFA) advises that, should a settlement not be reached with the Administration during the upcoming mediation on September 28-29, LUFA will be on legal strike as of 12:01 am on Tuesday, September 30, 2014.

The first round of mediation was on September 14-15. At the request of the mediator and with the agreement of the two parties, details of the mediation cannot be disclosed. LUFA remains committed to a negotiated settlement.

At this point students should not panic. It must be kept in mind that a strike is not a favourable outcome for any party involved. In addition to this, meetings have already been scheduled for post-September 29th 2014 in case an agreement is not reached and contingency plans do exist to catch students up.

Students should not worry about whether or not they will lose their semester or year at this point, as much would still have to go wrong before that was the case. Your Students’ Union is in continuous contact with both the administration of Laurentian University and the Laurentian University Faculty Association and will keep you up-to-date on any further developments or potential contingency plans.

The University has setup an updates page on their website which can be viewed at and if you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to email me at In addition, any general concerns students have can be voiced on our Facebook page, website, Twitter account, and the Oohlala smartphone app.

In Solidarity,

Ashley Shannahan,

Laurentian Students’ Union President 2014-2015

*The opt-out/opt-in deadline is September 30, 2014*

This year there seems to be some road bumps with the health plan, not only with Laurentian taking over registration, but also with some procedural changes with our service provider.

Typically, if you have registered as a full-time Laurentian student you have already paid your health and dental plan fee and would be automatically covered by the plan. Part time students should not be charged this fee and must opt-in if they require coverage. However, there seems to be some discrepancy between what student’s are understanding they are registered as and what they have indicated their “intended course load” as.

All students should check their webadvisor account to see if they have been charged this fee ($285) or check with LU Administration in C303 or at the 130 Bell Farm Rd. Offices.

The coverage will go live at once all students have opted in or out so until then save your receipts. Once the coverage has been made live you will be able to submit your receipts to the service provider using claims forms, available below or in our office, E 112A.
